Car insurance options for new and young drivers

In order to start learning to drive it is essential that you are at least 17 years of age and are in possession of a valid provisional drivers licence. In order to drive a vehicle you must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 21 who has held a full drivers licence for at least 3 years. Before you start you should also check the vehicle you are about to drive is roadworthy, taxed and insured.

However, whilst most young people look forward to the freedom having the ability to drive brings, accident statistics amongst new and young drivers are extremely high which in turn makes finding cheap car insurance very difficult.

Car buying tips for new drivers

In terms of driving, selecting your first car will be one of the most important decisions you will make. The secret behind it is to complete your research and work out the ongoing running costs before you buy. You should be looking out for insurance groups, fuel consumption, tax costs, servicing and tyre costs.

Once you have completed your research and decided on a make and model, you should shop around online to check availability and pricing. As you are a new driver, avoid modified cars as these will certainly increase your car insurance premium. During your first years of driving it is recommended that you go for a car with a small engine and low insurance group as this will help save money on your car insurance.

When you are ready to buy, be sure to look at as many examples as possible and always insist on a test drive and if possible take an experienced driver along with you. This will allow you to check for any problems with the car. If you are going to buy privately it is also a prudent choice to invest in a car data check, which should highlight any hidden history.

So what car insurance options are there for new and young drivers?

In 2008, some insurance providers such as More Than, Swiftcover and AXA removed new drivers from their product offering due to the high risk level involved. Indeed a 17 to 24 year old will now pay an average of £1,249.56 a year on car insurance according to Sainsbury’s Car Insurance Index.

Consequently it is vital to shop around and compare car insurance quotes – there are still options available for new drivers including:

17 – 24 Car Insurance – Offers policies to learner drivers with a discount for undertaking the Pass Plus course.

AA – Mainstream provider that offers learner driver car insurance with a discount for completing the Pass Plus course.

Collingwood Learner Driver Insurance – Designed so that learners can insurance themselves in the vehicles they are learning in, for as little as a week at a time.

Endsleigh – Offers cover for provisional drivers, a Pass Plus discount and is the only insurer fully endorsed by the NUS.

Norwich Union – Includes a rapid bonus scheme that allows new drivers to earn a full 1 year’s no claim discount in just 9 months.

The Road Traffic Act states that all motorists must be insured that all motorists must be insured for liability against injury to others, including passengers, and damage to the proprety of others. Therefore, third party cover is all that is required to legally drive in the UK. While it is sensible to secure as much cover as you can afford, many new drivers prefer third party to third party fire and theft and comprehensive cover, as it is the more affordable option.

In addition some providers will offer insurance at a reduced rate while you are learning as it is mandatory to be accompanied by a more experienced driver.

The importance of safe driving

Even though new drivers make up a small percentage of drivers they are involved in 29% of accidents predominately due to general inexperience and reckless driving.

According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration 41% of teens who are involved in car accidents weren’t wearing seatbelts. Driving recklessly, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, acting aggressively behind the wheel such as tailgating the car in front of you, is responsible for at least 25% of road accidents every year in the UK.

Driving safely is crucial – stick to the speed limit, never drive under the influence, don’t drive when tired and always be mindful of the actions of other road users.
